“THE STRENGTH OF SILENCE”
“He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.” Proverbs 11:12 KJV
This verse paints a contrast between two kinds of hearts. The one lacking wisdom and the one filled with understanding. A person who is “void of wisdom” speaks with carelessness, allowing criticism, gossip, and judgment to flow freely from their lips. Their attitude toward others is marked by contempt rather than compassion. Such behavior is not only unkind, but it also reveals an absence of spiritual insight.
In contrast, the “man of understanding” recognizes the power and consequences of words. He knows that once spoken, they cannot be taken back. This kind of person chooses silence, not because they have nothing to say, but because they have learned that wisdom sometimes speaks loudest through restraint.
Holding your peace takes discipline. It requires humility to admit that not every offense needs a response and not every situation calls for your opinion. The man or woman of understanding values harmony and chooses love over pride and trusts God to handle matters beyond their control.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this during His trial. Though falsely accused, mocked, and ridiculed, He did not retaliate. His silence was not weakness, it was strength under control and anchored in the will of His Father.
THINK ON THIS:
• Before you speak, ask: Will this help or harm? Will it heal or hurt?
• Pray for self-control to stay silent when silence is wiser than speech.
• Remember: what you do not say can be just as important as what you say.
Heavenly Father, please teach me the wisdom of holding my peace. Help me to speak only what is true, kind, and necessary. Remove from my heart the tendency to judge, despise, or speak ill of others. Fill me with the understanding that my words carry power and that sometimes the greatest power is found in silence. May my responses reflect the love and patience of Christ. In moments of provocation, let Your Spirit guide my tongue and guard my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen and To God Be The Glory!
