“WHEN MEMORY BECOMES A MIRROR”

It’s a powerful moment when someone who has strayed from God finds the courage to walk back into His house. Heaven rejoices. But how do we respond?
Too often, when a backslider returns, we replay a mental highlight reel of their sins, failures, and offenses. We don’t say it out loud, but our silence, our stares, or the coldness in our hearts speak volumes. We forget the grace that brought us through our own mess. We forget that we, too, needed mercy, and still do
.
Judgment, even when silent, is a loud offense in the kingdom of God.
Jesus taught us to remove the plank from our own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else’s (Matthew 7:3-5). When we hold someone’s past against them, we aren’t just harming them, we’re grieving the very Spirit that welcomed them home.
This quote is a mirror. It tells us: if someone’s redemption makes you uncomfortable, then it’s not them who needs to repent, it’s you. The altar is not just for the obviously broken. It’s also for the subtly proud. For the quietly bitter. For the spiritual forgetful.
When someone returns to God, it should remind us of how far we’ve come, and how much further we still need to go. The altar becomes not a place of judgment, but of unity. Of remembrance. Of renewed humility.
Ask yourself: Who have you silently judged for their past? Take a moment today to pray for their future and ask God to heal your heart in the process. Grace is not just what we receive; it’s also what we are called to give.
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” Galatians 6:1 (NIV)
Heavenly Father, please forgive me for the times I’ve let pride cloud my heart and memory. Forgive me when I’ve looked at someone’s past instead of their courage to return. Thank You for the grace that welcomed me time and time again. Soften my heart to love like You love and to celebrate restoration instead of clinging to judgment.
When I’m tempted to remember the worst in someone, remind me of the best You see in them. And if I ever find myself standing in judgment instead of kneeling in prayer, lead me straight to the altar. In Jesus’ name, Amen and To God Be The Glory!
With love, faith, and fervent prayers,
